VR headset viewer with eye tracking & head tracking for turret.

The OPTIMIS project we carried out for John Cockerill Defense involved developing a system to enhance situational awareness on the Cockerill® i-X (an armored vehicle designed for intelligence and agile interception missions). The system comprises a Virtual Reality (VR) headset linked to a turret and a 180° panoramic camera. It also incorporates head tracking.

The OPTIMIS project is a derivative of our eVSA system, a high-performance tool for observation (enhanced vision system)/detection/identification, environmental awareness (Situational Awareness), driving and localization assistance (including SLAM/terrain recognition in the absence of GPS), and assisted fire control. eVSA is also a mission computer. All these functions are performed in degraded weather conditions or at night (DVE degraded visual environment).

The eVSA system consists of the following components:

  • A panoramic camera (environment assessment, object detection and recognition)
  • A steerable “gyro ball” camera with zoom optics: IDENTIFICATION, threat qualification (gyrostabilized gimbal, pan-tilt-zoom spotter)
  • SHOOTING DRIVE zoom
  • On-board image analysis, recording and mission computer
  • Man-machine interfaces
  • “CLBS”: multispectral research laser projector (very high-power VISIBLE, VNIR, SWIR)
